Better transport for Putney

One of my key priorities for our area is to ensure we have good transport links, to ensure residents can access local services easily and to ensure people’s journeys whether to work or to visit family and friends are as smooth and pleasant as possible.

District Line & South West Trains:

I have campaigned for better conditions for commuters, particularly on the District Line which serves much of Putney and Southfields, and it’s great that at long last air-conditioned trains with 25% extra capacity are now in service on the District Line. The service consists of walk through trains which are much more spacious, are at the same level as the platforms to step on and off more easily and really improve passengers comfort and safety. The next investment will be to improve signalling on this line which will enable TfL to manage more trains on the track with fewer delays. I am also pleased that, for the overground service, South West Trains has listened to commuters concerns and are introducing new 10 carriage trains providing extra space for commuters during rush hour.

Putney Station

Although the work to modernise Putney Station has taken much longer than it should, it is now almost finished. There are improved passenger areas on the platforms, a new ticketing area with more machines, new retail outlets and new lifts. The façade will also be refurbished which will greatly improve the appearance of this end of Putney High Street.

I am working hard with Wandsworth Council to try to get a second entrance to the station in Oxford Road, and many residents have expressed their support for the idea. It would help ease overcrowding at the mainline station, offer easier access to passengers coming from East Putney and provide better links between the District Line at East Putney Station and Putney Station.

Local roads

I am working with Wandsworth Council and Transport for London to see how we can ease congestion and improve safety in and around the Roehampton Lane area, particularly during peak times, as there have been a number of accidents on the road. I have also been out with the police to carry out speed checks at locations across the constituency where there are particular problems with cars going too fast on residential roads.
